workshops
The creative workshop idea was born out of the idea of bringing like-minded creatives together under one roof for a focused period of time. Creatives often work in isolation, but enjoy and benefit from the exchange of ideas and real-time dialogue with people in similar fields. We host workshops across multiple disciplines, including: fiber arts to plein air painting, life drawing to abstraction, writing workshops with published authors to mixed media photography; yoga to mindfulness and personal development; and beyond. These workshops will be made up of tutorials, creative exercises, critiques, and one-on-ones with the instructors. Ideas will be shared, friends will be made, and your support network will expand.
Delight in our tranquil, country setting, perfect for focusing on work led by inspiring instructors and experts, while enjoying farm-to-table culinary delights catered by a local chef.
The dining experience at Willow Pond is elevated due to the extraordinary level of farm fresh, local foods and their accessibility. We have a wealth of talented chefs in this area who work with us and are as passionate about food as we are. Eggs are collected daily from our resident chickens and honey is provided by our resident bees on the property. Meals are curated from seasonal fresh produce with a local influence, and dining will be outside on the patio with views that linger long after the meal ends...
Willow Pond House can accommodate up to 9 people on-site sharing, or 5 people in individual rooms. If we are unable to accommodate you or you prefer to stay elsewhere, see the list at the bottom of the Guest Rooms page.
ABSTRACT ALCHEMY - BLACK, WHITE AND WARM METALLICS
5-Day workshop with Judith Kruger
September 15 - September 19, 2025
$1,312 includes lunch daily
Applications close on August 10, 2025 or when maximum number of 14 attendees is reached.
In this course, students will reinterpret nature’s deep imagery and essence employing matter from nature itself, within a limited earthy palette. Paint, ink, and homemade gesso will be made from inorganic and organic sources including pine soot, tree resin, insect, shells, and earth minerals. Metallic leafing and alchemic oxidation techniques will be introduced for warmth and depth. These arcane processes have been employed for thousands of years on cave walls, Asian scrolls, and aboriginal works. Painting and collage techniques will be covered to cultivate individualized expression in mixed media. We will work on a variety of Eastern and Western papers as well as wood panels. Eastern paper sizing, backing, and mounting techniques will be covered. This meaningful, process-driven, ecological (non-toxic, water-based) work truly nurtures the heart and spirit. Abstractionists and realists at all skill levels are welcome.
-
Students will be briefly introduced to instructor’s 20+ year’s research of inorganic and organic natural pigments, viewing historical and cultural reference and applications as evidenced in Lascaux Caves, Aboriginal bark work, Egyptian mummy cases, Indian miniatures, European Renaissance paintings, Tibetan Thangka Paintings, Qing Dynasty scrolls and Japanese Nihonga. During our time together, we will honor these ancient practices by employing several of their materials and methods, yet the main thrust of this workshop is to explore alchemical abstraction for contemporary art: the heartbeat of Judith’s work.
We will talk about “abstract” as a verb (not works of art as “abstracts”). To abstract is to extract or remove. We will walk in nature to draw and borrow from and with it, perceiving and observing its attributes. Our phones or iPad and/or sketchbooks will serve as capturing tools, while foraging elements to use in the studio: sticks, stones, leaves, dirt, bark.
Back in the studio we experiment with concoctions and processes that push the boundaries of the ordinary, towards metaphoric alchemy. Our arcane materials from local sources as well as Asia, India, Mexico and Europe, will ultimately yield visceral, contemplative, artwork. A limited earthy palette pushes form rather than color.
Materials derived from nature hold a special connection with nature in material presence. My goal is to help each of you to capture its deep essence, devoid of representation. By working with your own papers, printed photos and ephemera, you can make your work more personal as well. Hybridity is encouraged in this workshop.
Students have not only followed my instruction for making mixed media drawings and paintings, but also integrated their own practices for sculptural work, including books and 3D paper objects.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT IN WATERCOLOR
4-Day workshop with Geoffrey Allen
Friday, April 17 - Monday, April 20, 2026
$997 includes lunch daily
Applications close on March 6, 2026 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
Learn the joys of capturing the moment, color and mood in watercolor. This workshop will cover the basic watercolor handling techniques that can speed up your process, loosen you up, and increase your success in capturing outdoor scenes. Beginning and intermediate topics will be first covered in the studio then the class will transition outdoors to paint in plein air.
There will be daily skill building exercises focusing on controlling paper moisture, mixtures, and timing. Geoff’s demonstrations will review materials, and illustrate how all these techniques flow together and show students how to “keep it fresh”.
Geoff’s daily demos will cover how to take your inspiration through a process of simplification while enhancing design dynamics, expression, and creating atmosphere. It all starts with practicing watercolor’s quartet of skills; values, shapes, color, and mark making. Geoff will be following up individually with students to reinforce concepts and skills at their easel.
-
Day One: In the classroom; beginning with the basics of watercolor handling and learning how to read moisture in the paper in order to respond with a brush mixture. The class will then focus on understanding a three value approach to applying watercolor layers and how drawing a preliminary sketch can loosen up your watercolors. There will be a total of 3-4 demonstrations on this day.
Day Two: In the studio there will be two demonstrations. The class will review design concepts that will then be applied to a dramatic sky scene and then applying that technique to a farm scene to create movement and connection.
Day Three: Geoff will demonstrate in the morning outdoors at Willow Pond, followed by a student paint session. There will be a shorter demonstration in the afternoon of focusing on trees in the landscape.
Day Four: The class will meet at a Willow Pond location for a morning demo by Geoff that will focus on atmosphere and trees, followed by a student painting session. There will be a brief demo on inserting figures into the scene if time allows. The class will then meet for a sharing of students’ work at the workshop venue.

Geoff Allen is an award-winning Plein Air watercolor artist, whose painting “Color for Nothing” was recently on the cover of Plein Air Magazine (June/July 2024 issue). He finds that watercolor is both the medium and metaphor for “going with the flow.” This is what inspires Geoff. He loves the process of inserting himself into an environment with the goal of capturing its elusive essence in a quick fresh watercolor style. The mystery of not knowing the expressive outcome and allowing for discovery along the way makes plein air painting Geoff’s preferred art making process.

FIGURATION AND ATMOSPHERE
4 - Day workshop with Johan Barrios
May 9 - May 12, 2026
$1,367 includes lunch daily
Applications close on March 28, 2026 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
Explore the creative process behind atmospheric figurative oil painting with Colombian artist, Johan Barrios. From reference photography to drawing and layered oil techniques, the focus will be on building mood and narrative through a personal, intuitive approach to the figure.
A 4-day oil painting workshop focused on teaching my personal creative process through a combination of demonstrations, guided exercises, and one-on-one feedback. The workshop would emphasize both skill-building and conceptual exploration. Participants will focus on fundamental elements such as depth and composition, posing the figure, light, and color while learning to incorporate objects in unexpected ways to create tension, narrative complexity, and poetic ambiguity.
-
Day 1 - Introduction to my work and personal process / working with a live model and various objects / photography
I will introduce myself and my work, my painting process, style and artistic journey. We will then work together on setting up a scene and posing a model, playing with lighting, photography and editing, exploring color variations, and discussing and selecting, as a group, the strongest photo reference to work from the rest of the week.Day 2 - Sketching / Quick color study / Transferring final drawing to canvas
Using various traditional color filters, we will warm up by doing a quick light and color study of a simple still life, then we will move into drawing our previously selected image before transferring to our painting surface. I will demonstrate and explain how to use a grid system as a guide to creating a more accurate preliminary drawing. We will prep our canvas, transfer our drawing, and begin underpainting.Day 3 - Painting demonstration / Mixing color palette / Oil painting - layer 1 I will teach and guide everyone on creating our color palette, mixing oils, the purpose of using specific mediums, and then we will formally begin our final piece. This day will focus on the first layer of the painting including how to recreate my abstract backgrounds using a combination of brushes and flat bench scrapers. I will demonstrate and also provide one-on-one guidance.
Day 4 - Oil painting - refinement and finish / Final group critique
This last day we will learn how to refine the painting without overworking, accentuating focal points and enhancing atmosphere. We will also practice critiquing and have a discussion on growth, challenges, and takeaways. -

Johan Barrios is a Colombian contemporary artist born in 1982 in Barranquilla. He studied visual arts at the Universidad of Antioquia in Medellin, where he also began his artistic career. Today, he lives and works in Houston, TX and is represented by KIRK Gallery in Aalborg, Denmark.
Barrios is known for his haunting figurative paintings that blend realism with surreal, dreamlike elements. His subjects, often human figures, are shown in awkward, lifeless postures, appearing weightless or disconnected from reality. He works primarily with oil paint, graphite, watercolor, and charcoal, starting with photographs and sketches before creating layered, atmospheric pieces. His muted, desaturated color palette helps unify his compositions and enhances their emotional intensity.
In his work, figures often interact with everyday objects like chairs, pillows, blankets, or plants, creating a sculptural sense of tension and balance. He’s less interested in portraying identity and more focused on exploring the relationship between weight, space, and stillness. The blurred edges, soft lighting, and translucent brushwork give his paintings a quiet, enigmatic presence.
Barrios has exhibited widely in Europe and North America, including solo shows like Lightness, Silence, and Absorption. His work has been featured in art publications such as Hi-Fructose, Artnet, and MutualArt. Through his unique approach, Barrios invites viewers to reflect on the human condition, stillness, and the subtle boundary between the real and the imagined.

Materials recommended:
Paint brushes. I prefer plastic bristle brushes for acrylic or latex from Home depot. Get one 2 inch. One three inch, and one four inch plastic brushes. Also bring at least one good thin acrylic brush for making skinny lines.
I like to put my brushes on long sticks. You can use ¼ inch lattice cut in 30-40 inch sticks or ½ inch dowel rods. To make long brushes.
Black Gaffer Tape (real gaffer tape) will tape the brush to the sticks. I will bring 1 roll and the whole class can use it.
Heavy clear plastic roll 3.5mil or from Home Depot for making dried acrylic paint patches that can be cut up into shapes, or lines and attached to the surface of your painting.
See Demonstration images and description below. If you plan to make these, it might be a good idea to make them in advance and bring them rolled like fruit roll ups in your travel case.
1 roll Blue tape
two or three stretched canvas pre primed 30x40 48x48 or 60x48” or raw canvas that you can stretch. Your preference. Also, several small canvas or wood mounts to work on while large works are drying. 8”x8” or 8x10 or 5x7 or 6x6 inch. Amazon sells nice wood mounts for a good price. See link.
We will use acrylic. I prefer Utretch. Your preference is fine. This list is what I plan to use. I find it better to have more than enough than too little.
1 Gallon Titanium White
1 quart of deep or Ivory Black.
1 quart Yellow Ocher
These are the colors and sizes I will use. Please choose the colors you will want to work with. With Utrehct some colors are offered in the Artist’s series on DickBlick and some are in the Studio series.

Small tube Studio Series Medium Green or similar
Large tube Artist Titanium or Studio Lemon yellow
Large tube Artist Hansa yellow or Studio deep yellow
Large tube cadmium or orange light or Studio Medium Orange
Mediums
Half Gallon Liquitex Fluids Acrylic Medium Matte
Half Gallon Liquitex Fluids Acrylic Medium Gloss
Spray paint.
I like to have at least a few colors from Montana Gold. These are only suggestions and I may have extra you can use a bit of.
Shock Red
Shock Black
Gleaming Pink. (fluorescent)
Lawn green or similar.
For drawing use Tempera sticks. Choose your own colors or combo set
PLaycolor Basics. Order on Amazon. Or other brands. These are typically for kids but they are pigment rich and make really nice marks.
For the small works, I like to start with acrylic or spray paint but often finish them with oil sticks. R&F are very nice but they take a looong time to dry.

Gordon Studer’s earthy, confident abstracts are rooted in his discipline as an award-winning commercial illustrator, lending his work a strong, graphic cadence. The result speaks to liminal experience, interstitial time, and dreamscapes in deliberate forms in black atop a palette of ochre, sky blue, and crushed clays.
Having studied fine art at Penn State, he went on to teach at the California College of the Arts, and enjoyed a 25 year career telling visual stories for Fortune 500 corporate clients and major media outlets. His background is evident as he applies an intentionality to his paintings, delivering on a specific narrative, inviting the viewer to a purposeful encounter. Based in Sausalito, California, he once experienced a bout of complete amnesia, allowing him to refresh his perception of the natural world and question concepts such as imagination, dream, and recollection.

Daniel Bilmes is a contemporary painter, working in Los Angeles. His approach is characterized by deep personal exploration, combining realism with elements of symbolism and abstraction. Through tactile textures and delicate expressions, his paintings weave together the magical and mundane. His work is at once hopeful and brooding. Realistic and symbolic. Somewhere between the vitality of the Russian circus and the gravitas of a Churchill speech.
Daniel began his art education at the age of 8 under the tutelage of his father, the respected artist and educator, Semyon Bilmes. Being immersed in art from such an early age had a profound impact on his personal growth and creativity, laying a lasting foundation of curiosity that continues to drive and inform his work today.
His unique approach to painting combined with his subjects, and limited palette unify his paintings as well as give him a signature style. The fresh, energetic appearance of his works give the viewer the impression that the narrative of the work is taking place as they encounter it.

This immersive workshop is for artists ready to deepen their abstract painting practice—whether you're just beginning or have been at it for years. We'll explore the powerful intersection between intuition and intention, giving you the tools, structure, and mindset shifts you need to create bold, soulful work that truly reflects your unique voice.
Expect a soup-to-nuts experience that will energize your studio practice, sharpen your compositional instincts, and help you move past hesitation into clarity and confidence.
-
What we'll cover:
Color and Palette –Eliminating color chaos by creating harmonious palettes, working with neutrals, and exploring the endless possibilities of just black, white, red, and yellow.
Mark Making – Uncovering your personal mark-making vocabulary and learning how to use marks to infuse energy and rhythm into your paintings.
Starting Strong – Discovering several ways to begin a painting so you're never stuck staring at a blank canvas.
Bold Composition – Learning how to divide space on the picture plane with intention to create dynamic, compelling compositions that guide the viewer’s eye.
Depth and Layers – Exploring techniques like flux, obliteration, and layering techniques to create rich visual depth and emotional resonance.
Shape Language – Developing a shape vocabulary that’s distinctly your own and using it as a foundation for building more cohesive, compelling paintings.
Working Through the Middle – Navigating the tricky “muddy middle” of a painting, including how to get unstuck.
Finishing Strong – Creating a set of criteria for evaluating when a painting is complete—so you can move forward without second-guessing.
You'll be working on a large scale—60 X 48 and up—which will stretch your creative muscles and help you loosen up, trust your instincts, and paint with greater freedom and clarity.
This workshop is about more than just techniques—it's about learning to listen to your creative intelligence, cultivating your visual language, and approaching your work with joy, curiosity, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Paint: 2 of each primary, black, white, 3 to 5 colors of your choice. If you tend to use a lot of paint bring more. Inexpensive paint is suggested such as Liquitex Basics, Sennelier Abstract Acrylics in a pouch, Nova Color. You might consider a set of cool and warm primaries for variety. We will be doing a lot of color mixing so no need to bring a lot of different colors.
Gesso: Any brand will work fine. You need gesso if you want to use it as a white alternative or to gesso your paper. Otherwise, it’s not necessary.
Mediums: Heavy Gel Gloss and Matte Medium or Glazing Liquid.
Drawing Tools: Have a variety on hand. Suggested are various forms of charcoal, i.e., pencil, stick or block, various forms of graphite including pencils such as Art Graf Soft Carbon, sticks, tailor’s chalk, Lyra 9B Water Soluble Graphite Crayon, Stabilio “Woody” thick pencils, water soluble art crayons, pastel, Sakura solid paint sticks.
Supports: Paper of your choice, either in a roll or sheets. Inexpensive paper is suggested for exercises. For exercises Strathmore multi-media paper in a roll is suggested. These rolls are 42 inches wide with 8 yards on a roll. This is a very durable paper and can handle a lot of abuse. If you prefer sheets, Stonehenge 90 pound paper comes in 22 X 30, 44 X 30 and 50 X 38. Unstretched canvas is a good option as it easier to transport, check Fredrix Universal 70/580 which comes in several different widths. Please do not buy stretched canvas wider than 53.” The amount of supports you need depends on how fast of a painter you are. We will be doing some exercises but there will be free painting time where you might want to be using the unstretched canvas. You can also bring stretched canvas not wider than 48.”
Brushes: Suggested are 1, 2 and 3 inch inexpensive chip brushes, and a few favorite brushes of your choice. Also useful are long handled brushes which you can make by taping a brush onto a thick long dowel stick which you can buy at Home Depot.
Painting Tools: Your favorite painting tools. Consider plastic or metal spreaders from Home Depot, squeegees, rollers, whisk broom, micro fiber duster, large or small paint sponge, long handled shower brush, etc. Plastic paint shapers are also a good option as are Bondo knives. Embrace the unconventional!
Miscellaneous: Palette of your choice, something to mix colors with such as plastic or metal small palette knives. Color wheel and gray scale.
Willow Pond will supply scissors, tape measures, trash bags, and paper towels, water buckets, a straight edge, and spray bottles.
Don’t forget to bring return shipping labels and packing materials.

Julie Schumer was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As a very young girl she covered herself in Kelly green paint one day, luxuriating in the sensuous feel of paint, thus beginning her infatuation with painting. At age 5 she adopted an abstract expressionist style, continuing in this vein through high school.
Julie ultimately became a criminal defense lawyer, returning to her art practice in her mid-forties. She relocated to Santa Fe, NM from the Northern California area in 2002 where she has dedicated herself to her painting process. She began her painting career with very colorful and energetic abstract work that has over time evolved into work that is more introspective and contemplative.
Over the past 20 years Julie has shown her work in various Santa Fe galleries as well as galleries and other venues across the nation. Her paintings are in numerous private collections as well as the public collection maintained by the Tucson airport and have been featured in numerous publications.

CYANOTYPE PRINTING & TONING WITH BOTANICALS
4-Day Workshop with Chrissy Huhn
Friday, August 14 - Monday, August 17, 2026
$1,098 includes lunch daily
Applications close on July 3, 2026 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
In this workshop, students will explore the historic photographic process of cyanotype, known for its deep Prussian blue tones, and discover how different botanicals can transform these blueprints into a varied palette of colors. Participants will learn to mix chemistry, coat paper and fabric, and print using both digital negatives and found objects. Through hands-on experimentation with teas, herbs, and other plants, students will tone their prints and explore the expressive possibilities of this alternative process. Open to all skill levels, no photography experience required.
-
Over the course of four days, students will gain a thorough understanding of the cyanotype process, a nineteenth-century photographic method that develops in sunlight or UV exposure to create deep blue prints. We will begin with the basics: mixing cyanotype chemistry, preparing and coating papers and fabrics, and printing with both objects to create photograms and digital negatives.
Historically, cyanotype toning was achieved through both chemical and botanical methods. In this workshop, we will focus on the ecological and creative possibilities of botanical toning, using materials such as teas, herbs, and locally foraged plants. Each plant imparts its own character to the print, shifting the blue into warm browns, soft violets, or other unexpected hues. Students will experiment with both printmaking paper and fabric, exploring how each surface responds from the initial cyanotype chemistry to the final botanical toning.
This workshop emphasizes experimentation and individual expression. No prior photography experience is required, and the process is approachable for artists working in any medium. Through guided instruction, demonstrations, and open studio time, students will leave with a collection of unique prints, a working knowledge of cyanotype chemistry and toning, and the confidence to continue exploring the process independently.

• Strathmore printing paper 8x10" pad
• Cotton fabric
• Foam brushes
• MISC botanicals for toning
• Pocket folder with print sleeves

THE EXPRESSIVE FIGURE
4-Day workshop with David Limrite
Saturday, October 3 - Tuesday, October 6, 2026
$1,445 includes lunch daily
Applications close on September 5, 2026 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
In this workshop, students will be challenged to look for what could be, instead of seeing what is. We will embark on a journey filled with exploration and discovery as we search for the magical balance between the two. The search will continue in order to find the right line, tone, smudge, color, texture and shape, resulting in a collection of marks that reveal and celebrate the process. Our working surfaces will be considered arenas of struggle where desire, chance, skill, ideas, media and surface will all be engaged in this process.
-
Our goal will be to strike a balance between structure and accident, restraint and recklessness, and being deliberate as well as relying on our instincts. Students will be asked to remain open to their mixed media drawings and paintings being about something they did not expect and about taking them places where they did not expect to go.
This workshop will approach mixed-media figure drawing and painting as a creative and expressive activity. Students will respond to the model and to the manipulation of their chosen materials in order to arrive at dynamic and unique solutions. Be prepared to exaggerate, distort, twist and elongate the figure in order to create dynamic, powerful, bold, expressive and emotional pieces of art. There will be plenty of demonstrations, critiques, and both individual and group instruction. If you are looking for a fresh perspective for your creativity, an energy boost for you and your work, or if you are just looking for a different workshop experience, then this workshop is for you.

David Limrite was born in Salinas, California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University. Yet, feeling as though had not placed enough emphasis on the techniques of drawing, he entered Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Through his studies there, he acquired and developed the essence of his figurative work.
Limrite’s stylistic abilities and conceptual attributes were actuated by his position as Art Director in the Editorial Department at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He began to understand the strong contrasts inherent in black and white photography as well as the dramatic impact of the tragic pictorial imagery he constantly encountered during his time at the newspaper. He eventually applied these characteristics to his own emotional and dramatic mixed media work.
Limrite’s current work continues an investigation of the struggle for understanding and ultimate acceptance of complex emotional issues. Using primarily graphite, charcoal, acrylic and collage, his work combines virtuoso drawing with cathartic expressionism. Limrite uses emotional content to give his figures power and intensity, underscoring their emotion through passionate handling of materials which animates the figures and suggests energy between the forms.
Limrite’s studio and home are in Atascadero, California, on the central coast. He taught drawing and painting at Art Center College of Design for 12 years and at the Brentwood Art Center for 23 years where he was also the Director of Education for 7 years.
In addition to being a full-time artist, David currently teaches workshops in Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo and Palm Springs, is an Artists Coach and Mentor, conducts private one-on-one critiques and authors his “Create Like You Mean It” weekly blog. He recently published his first book, CREATE ANYWAY - Become An Empowered Artist and Create with Confidence.

EXPRESSIONS OF THE RANCH THROUGH OIL PAINT
4-Day Workshop with Derek Harrison
Monday, October 12 - Thursday, October 15, 2026
$1,440 includes lunch daily
Applications close on September 31, 2026 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
In this immersive class, Oil Painter Derek Harrison will explore painting the art of the west. This will include painting horses on location from life, photographing reference material of horse and rider wearing authentic ranch attire and dynamic ranch landscapes. Students will utilize both plein air sketches as well as photo references to construct paintings of horses along with a modern day cowboy, ranch foreman, Peter Charnock. This knowledge is fundamental in order to paint accurate and beautiful western scenes. The students will gain an understanding of horse anatomy, light/shadow, atmospheric perspective, drawing, composition, and paint handling.
-
Students will be introduced to the realist painting practices of instructor Derek Harrison. This will include the benefits of working from life. The first day will be spent at Varian Ranch with ranch foreman, Peter Charnock. Participants will be able to observe the natural movements of horses up close. The group will be able to sketch horses as well as the landscape around the ranch.
These plein air studies are a great way to familiarize yourself with this subject matter. The group will then shoot reference photos of these subjects to work from back in the studio. Combining both reference photos and studies from life will yield a very authentic and accurate depiction of ranch life.
Throughout the next three days, students will build highly developed oil paintings portraying western scenes of their choice utilizing the material gathered on day one. Color theory, texture, light/shadow, expressive brushwork combined with accurate modeling, materials and story telling within a painting will all be covered thoroughly. Daily demos as well as one on one instruction will be provided throughout all 4 days.
Our goal will be to strike a balance between structure and accident, restraint and recklessness, and being deliberate as well as relying on our instincts. Students will be asked to remain open to their mixed media drawings and paintings being about something they did not expect and about taking them places where they did not expect to go.
