workshops

The creative workshop idea was born out of the idea of bringing like-minded creatives together under one roof for a focused period of time. Creatives often work in isolation, but enjoy and benefit from the exchange of ideas and real-time dialogue with people in similar fields. We host workshops across multiple disciplines, including: fiber arts to plein air painting, life drawing to abstraction, writing workshops with published authors to mixed media photography; yoga to mindfulness and personal development; and beyond. These workshops will be made up of tutorials, creative exercises, critiques, and one-on-ones with the instructors. Ideas will be shared, friends will be made, and your support network will expand.

Delight in our tranquil, country setting, perfect for focusing on work led by inspiring instructors and experts, while enjoying farm-to-table culinary delights catered by a local chef.

The dining experience at Willow Pond is elevated due to the extraordinary level of farm fresh, local foods and their accessibility. We have a wealth of talented chefs in this area who work with us and are as passionate about food as we are. Eggs are collected daily from our resident chickens and honey is provided by our resident bees on the property. Meals are curated from seasonal fresh produce with a local influence, and dining will be outside on the patio with views that linger long after the meal ends...

Willow Pond House can accommodate up to 9 people on-site sharing, or 5 people in individual rooms. If we are unable to accommodate you or you prefer to stay elsewhere, see the list at the bottom of the Guest Rooms page.

You will progress to more complex items and add more details with line working first in charcoal on newsprint, we will give you some solid foundation drawing skills for still life. Next, we will learn about values, the subtle changes from darkness to lightness that help give things volume and look 3 dimensional. We will work with Gouache paint on paper and focus on value changes initially in black and white. We will end with basic color theory and mixing, learn about color harmony, and complimentary colors, and paint a few still-life items in color. This is all designed to give you the core fundamentals you need!

See full bio below or visit her site at vanessarothefineart.com

  • Day 1

First we will be using charcoal on newsprint then gouache (Oils ok for intermediate artists. If they already are intermediate and paint in oils, those students can then use oils, but must bring their own oils and substrates.) Vanessa will do multiple short demo’s drawing at her easel, after which the artists will attempt the same drawing right away. Using a centerline, combing basic shapes to make objects, the concept of “ drawing through”, seeing planes etc. Hand outs will be given, or downloaded to their phones.

LINE First creating basic circles and straight lines and quickly turning them into well proportioned line drawings of still life items. Students will draw cups, plates, and organic round and odd shape fruits for basics to start. Emphasis is on training the hand to draw correctly and understanding what they see. Rothe will give drawing tips and tricks, … key shortcuts that only artists know!

VALUE We then review value and shading. Rendering to create volume. Starting ONLY in black and white at first. This is done with charcoal on newsprint. Students will be taught to read value in greyscale, with charts. value ideas and how to shade. Important focus given to SEEING light and shadow on the objects and adding core, cast shadows as well as light and mid tones. VIP!

PAINTING- We will begin to paint in black and white only the first day. Creating our own greyscale value chart that we can each use to refer back to as well move forward. Keep this value chart in your studio and use as you progress.

    Day 2

Painting with COLOR! More discussions on rendering to create volume, and we will learn the basics of color mixing. Using 3 basic colors red, yellow and blue, plus our black and white we will learn to mix secondary colors and how to tint and shade those colors to create clever value puddles in color.

We will learn the importance of this PRE mixing 3-4 values and paint sill life items with color. Later we will discuss Warms and cools, complimentary colors etc. This day will include larger still life items and various sizes.

A few composition concepts will also be covered as well at the end of the day. Such as grouping the rule of thirds, varying depth and size. How to light your still life and set up different size objects.

The instructor will supply charcoal, gum erasers, newsprint, 2 paint brushes each, gouache paints and individual plastics pallets and high quality watercolor paper.

SENSING PLACE THROUGH FIBER PAPER COLLAGE

4-Day workshop with Jacqueline Mallegni
Thursday, May 29 - Sunday, June 1. 2025

Applications close on April 29, 2025 or when maximum number of attendees is reached.
$1,116 includes lunch daily

Incorporating concepts of wabi-sabi and the notion of an organic visual narrative, I invite you to join me on a 4-day artistic journey exploring the transformation of flax fiber into textured collage panels capturing light, shadow and texture.

Wabi-sabi refers to an awareness of the transient nature of earthly things and a corresponding pleasure in the things that bear the mark of this impermanence. Haiku, is a three line poem with seventeen phonetic syllables. Together these concepts will be the thread of our creative process as we explore the nature of flax fiber paper, materiality and the art of making.

Permeate your collage panels with a sense of place from the natural environs or from an idea or story that is ready to be told. Inclusions such as thread, photos, decorative paper, plant fiber, ink, plant based stain and indigo can be applied for surface embellishment and depth.

  • Take a deep dive into fiber art through collage and materiality during this 4-day workshop retreat. Explore the nature of textured paper combined with foraged materials, thread, ink and dye.

    • Immerse yourself in meditative creative process.

    • Principal areas of focus are paper-making with flax fiber for collage.

    • Develop a project or idea using collage concepts for decorative panels.

    • Receive daily process oriented demonstrations and visual presentations in a collaborative environment.

    • Implement new techniques with natural fibers.

    • The workshop is designed to alternate between focused instructional demonstrations and uninterrupted time for art making between sessions.

    • Materials provided for the workshop retreat: flax roving, window screen, PVA glue, handmade Kozo paper, indigo, sumi ink, black walnut fiber, silk thread, tools and brushes.

    • All skill levels are welcome.

    What to bring:

A foraging bag for collecting inclusions from surrounding areas

    Hand clippers

    Apron

Your favorite decorative paper, thread, photos, mono prints and calligraphy brush

  • Jacqueline’s journey with paper made by hand began with kozo fiber in 1989 using a traditional Japanese paper-making technique.

My personal relationship to desert wind has been especially challenging. A few years ago a friendship with wind occurred and the first "Desert Wind" series blossomed from a place of disturbance, not unlike how lotus grow in mud representing purity of an open mind arising amidst suffering. Perhaps my shadow and the arid climate are designing a new dance with wind. A place to settle, rest and create.

A coastal northern California native, I've lived in New Mexico since 2010. My art practice focuses on three-dimensional fiber sculpture including Japanese style handmade paper, wood, ink, indigo, thread and plant fiber. I am inspired by wild landscapes, seasonal changes and the interrelationship between people and the planet. As an exhibiting artist since 1997, my work has been presented nationally and internationally in galleries and art trade-shows. My sculptures have been featured in several publications, and through artist residency fellowships.”

Jacqueline is a member of IAPMA (International Association of Papermakers & Paper Artists), Surface Design Association, Hand Papermaking Magazine and the New Mexico Women in the Arts.

  • Gordon Studer’s earthy, confident abstracts are rooted in his discipline as an award-winning commercial illustrator, lending his work a strong, graphic cadence. The result speaks to liminal experience, interstitial time, and dreamscapes in deliberate forms in black atop a palette of ochre, sky blue, and crushed clays.

Having studied fine art at Penn State, he went on to teach at the California College of the Arts, and enjoyed a 25 year career telling visual stories for Fortune 500 corporate clients and major media outlets. His background is evident as he applies an intentionality to his paintings, delivering on a specific narrative, inviting the viewer to a purposeful encounter. Based in Sausalito, California, he once experienced a bout of complete amnesia, allowing him to refresh his perception of the natural world and question concepts such as imagination, dream, and recollection.

ABSTRACT ALCHEMY - BLACK, WHITE AND WARM METALLICS

5-Day workshop with Judith Kruger
September 15 - September 19, 2025

$1,373 includes lunch daily
Applications close on August 10, 2025 or when maximum number of 12 attendees is reached.

In this course, students will reinterpret nature’s deep imagery and essence employing matter from nature itself, within a limited earthy palette. Paint, ink, and homemade gesso will be made from inorganic and organic sources including pine soot, tree resin, insect, shells, and earth minerals. Metallic leafing and alchemic oxidation techniques will be introduced for warmth and depth. These arcane processes have been employed for thousands of years on cave walls, Asian scrolls, and aboriginal works. Painting and collage techniques will be covered to cultivate individualized expression in mixed media. We will work on a variety of Eastern and Western papers as well as wood panels. Eastern paper sizing, backing, and mounting techniques will be covered. This meaningful, process-driven, ecological (non-toxic, water-based) work truly nurtures the heart and spirit. Abstractionists and realists at all skill levels are welcome.

  • Students will be briefly introduced to instructor’s 20+ year’s research of inorganic and organic natural pigments, viewing historical and cultural reference and applications as evidenced in Lascaux Caves, Aboriginal bark work, Egyptian mummy cases, Indian miniatures, European Renaissance paintings, Tibetan Thangka Paintings, Qing Dynasty scrolls and Japanese Nihonga. During our time together, we will honor these ancient practices by employing several of their materials and methods, yet the main thrust of this workshop is to explore alchemical abstraction for contemporary art: the heartbeat of Judith’s work.

We will talk about “abstract” as a verb (not works of art as “abstracts”). To abstract is to extract or remove. We will walk in nature to draw and borrow from and with it, perceiving and observing its attributes. Our phones or iPad and/or sketchbooks will serve as capturing tools, while foraging elements to use in the studio: sticks, stones, leaves, dirt, bark.

Back in the studio we experiment with concoctions and processes that push the boundaries of the ordinary, towards metaphoric alchemy. Our arcane materials from local sources as well as Asia, India, Mexico and Europe, will ultimately yield visceral, contemplative, artwork. A limited earthy palette pushes form rather than color.

Materials derived from nature hold a special connection with nature in material presence. My goal is to help each of you to capture its deep essence, devoid of representation. By working with your own papers, printed photos and ephemera, you can make your work more personal as well. Hybridity is encouraged in this workshop.

Students have not only followed my instruction for making mixed media drawings and paintings, but also integrated their own practices for sculptural work, including books and 3D paper objects.
