Embracing Fearless consciousness

Jason Hackenwerth considers his work a continual practice of arranging the stones along the artist's journey and professional career.

“I see my function as similar to a hiker on a remote trail who piles stones along the way to help others remain on the path. And as such, when I encounter dazzling works by other artists I feel a connectedness to the experience.”

Hackenwerth’s charismatic presence is both playful and daring, yet his demeanor is transparent, offering keen observation and helpful critique. Like many of our instructors, he inquires after each artist's passion and their intention for taking the course. Jason’s teaching style is reassuring and multifaceted, and one of the most interesting elements of hosting this workshop last month was the captivating conversation he encouraged.

Jason brought his full self and a full heart to every moment. Leading with his own vulnerability, struggles, laughter, and tears, he shared a rawness that was both penetrating and delicate, encouraging the whole group to let their guard down, keep up, and push through.

The students embraced the fearless approach to mark-making from day one. Which of course, reflected the title of the class. By the end of the morning of the first day, each artist stood before 2 or more large, colored, and boldly marked canvases affixed to the walls, working quickly and buzzing with a dynamic energy. It was phenomenal to see how productive everyone was, leaving Willow Pond with up to 8 or more successful works.

By the end of our five days together, we received a round of remarks about how life-changing it was. Plans for collaborative art shows were made, and impromptu art sales even happened right there and then! It was a such a treat to witness so many lasting connections being made. We were given no choice but to ask him to come back next year and to our delight, we made plans for round two.
