The Sun Sets on Summer: A Farewell workshop at the Equinox
Judy Kruger’s workshop September 15-19th, 2025
Over five incredible days Judith Kruger's abstract painting course urged students to reinterpret nature’s deep imagery and essence by employing materials sourced directly from nature. Throughout the week this lively group explored a variety of painting, drawing, and collage methods that encouraged individualized expression in mixed-media abstraction. Judith talks about “abstract” as a verb ( not works of art as “abstracts). To abstract or remove. To this end students in this workshop walked out into the sunlight to forage near the pond, or under the oaks and willow for inspiration in nature and search of "something" that speaks to them. Back in the studio the artists experimented with concoctions and processes that push the boundaries of the ordinary, towards metaphoric alchemy.
Student worked on a variety of Eastern and Western papers as well as wood panels and used paint, ink and home-made gessoes made from a limited palette of earth minerals, and plant matter. Kruger instructed students on metallic leafing and alchemic oxidation techniques and how they interplay with a variety of painting, drawing and collage techniques. Overall it was a deeply insighful week that cultivated individualized expression in mixed-media abstraction and the perfect close out the summer and our workshop line up of 2025.
